Belgium may be the most in-form country of the nine who make up the pot after cruising through FIFA World Cup qualifying, defeating Croatia in the process. Croatia themselves have reached four out of five final tournaments since independence, getting to two quarter-finals – a feat bettered by Sweden who won through to the last four on home soil in 1992 when Denmark lifted the trophy. The Czech Republic were champions as part of Czechoslovakia in 1976 while Hungary have twice lost at the semi-final stage, most recently in 1972, their last finals appearance.

The Republic of Ireland and Ukraine were both present at UEFA EURO 2012 while Pot 2's remaining nation, Switzerland, will hope to qualify for a fourth continental showpiece under new coach Vladimir Petković.
