The little boy who became a super hero after discovering three magical items – a cape, boots and a ball – was the star of the evening as he introduced himself to the world ahead of France's friendly against Sweden.

Warmly welcomed by the stadium announcer, the mascot – proudly wearing his No16 shirt – entered the Stade Vélodrome pitch to a delighted reception from the crowd, while the logo of UEFA EURO 2016 was displayed proudly in the centre circle before the players entered the field. Staging a mock kick-off before the real business got under way, he returned at half-time as the life of the party and showed his football skills before doing a lap of the stadium and meeting his fans.

"It is a good idea to have chosen a little boy rather than an animal," said Colette, a Les Bleus supporter from Marseille, after catching her first glimpse of the mascot. "He is cute and likeable, I believe my kids will love him."

Wearing the host country's colours, this little football genius whom, through his footballing skills, empathy and good nature, seeks to bring all supporters together, was created by the Zebra group, a French design company. Everywhere he goes he carries with him the messages and values of UEFA EURO 2016: pride, sharing and respect.

Until 26 November, the public will be able to vote for their preferred name for the mascot – Driblou, Goalix or Super Victor – by subscribing on UEFA's website. A draw will then take place and one subscriber – who must be a resident of France – will win the opportunity to meet the mascot in person at their football club.

On 23 November the mascot will be a guest on the TF1 football show Téléfoot, and a week later on the same platform his name will be revealed. The mascot will have his own social media accounts and will be appearing at various key events in the build-up to the tournament. He will, of course, also be present at all tournament matches in France – from the opening match on 10 June 2016 to the final on 10 July 2016.
