England became the first side to join hosts France in UEFA EURO 2016 with a 6-0 victory away to San Marino, a match also notable for Wayne Rooney's 49th goal for his country, equalling the national record held by Sir Bobby Charlton.

Roy Hodgson's men have now won all seven Group E games and can become only the sixth team to qualify for a UEFA European Championship with a perfect record, with fixtures against Switzerland (home, 8 September), Estonia (home, 9 October) and Lithuania (away, 12 October) to come.

Regardless of the outcome of those matches, England will take their place in the final tournament draw in Paris on 12 December.

Reaction
Roy Hodgson, England manager

We had to win today and we did. We wanted to be disciplined and put in a good performance. We could maybe have scored a couple of goals more, but we won and we've qualified for EURO 2016.

Wayne Rooney, England captain
It's a proud moment to equal Sir Bobby Charlton's record. My aim is to push on and try and help the team win on Tuesday and break the record. It would have been great if the record had happened tonight. Obviously the tradition of Wembley and to break the record at Wembley would be great.

Sir Bobby is in the dressing room at Manchester United after all the games and he has a presence about him. He has given me advice. I would swap all these goals for a winners' medal next summer.

Harry Kane, England striker
It's great to get on the scoresheet. A lot has been said about me not scoring this season but I came off the bench and thankfully scored.

It is a great achievement by Wayne Rooney to equal the goalscoring record and we are all buzzing for him but the whole team did well and we don't want to stop here as we want to keep moving on.
