EURO 2004™ hosts Portugal have agreed a friendly match against Sweden

EURO 2004™ hosts Portugal have agreed a friendly match against Sweden

Key game
The two sides, who suffered contrasting fortunes at the 2002 FIFA World Cup finals, will meet in a friendly at Ullevi stadium in Gothenburg on 6 October 2002. It will be a key game for Portugal because, as hosts of the finals, they will not have a qualification campaign. For Sweden, the match will serve as a vital warm-up for their qualifier against Hungary at Råsunda stadium six days later.

Latvia first
Sweden kick off their qualifying campaign for EURO 2004™ with a trip to Latvia on 7 September. They have been drawn in qualifying Group 4, and will also be up against Poland and San Marino.

World Cup exits
Portugal were surprisingly eliminated from the World Cup after losing twice in their three group stage matches. Sweden topped their group, ahead of England, Argentina and Nigeria, to reach the second round. However, a 'golden goal' then saw Sweden lose 2-1 to Senegal.
