Sáez sizes up Contreras

Málaga CF goalkeeper Pedro Contreras has been called up by Spain coach Iñaki Sáez.

Málaga CF goalkeeper Pedro Contreras has been called into Iñaki Sáez's Spain squad for their first EURO 2004™ qualifier.

Casillas cover
Contreras, who joined Málaga from Real Madrid CF three years ago, has been chosen by coach Sáez to provide cover for current Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas in next week's qualifying game away against Greece.

Málaga regular
The goalkeeper has been in impressive form throughout his career at Málaga and helped his side earn a place in the UEFA Cup this season as they won 2-1 against Primera División rivals Villarreal CF in one of the three finals of this season's UEFA Intertoto Cup.

Third-choice goalkeeper
Despite travelling to the FIFA World Cup finals with Spain this summer as third-choice goalkeeper, Contreras has yet to make his debut for the national side, and will be hoping to find new opportunities under the new coach.

Four new faces
In his second match in charge of the national side, Sáez has selected four other players who were not involved in last week's 1-1 friendly draw against Hungary. Madrid's Iván Helguera, Valencia CF's Rubens Baraja, and RC Deportivo La Coruña's César and Romero will all join Contreras in the 19-man squad which will fly to Greece for the game on 7 September

Spain squad
Casillas, Contreras, Garcia Calvo, César, Enrique Romero, Puyol, Raúl Bravo, Marchena, Orbaiz, Mendieta, Xavi, Baraja, Helguera, Joaquín, Valerón, Vicente, Raúl Tamudo, Raúl González, Morientes.
