Luis Aragonés has agreed to stay on as coach of Spain for another two years, ending speculation that he would resign after the country's FIFA World Cup exit.

'Pleased'
After negotiations with the Spanish Football Federation the 67-year-old announced he would remain in charge of the team in the quest to win UEFA EURO 2008™. "The federation has convinced me to renew my contract," Aragonés said. "There is the [UEFA] European Championship coming up and they needed a coach. They told me that they were happy with my work and that they wanted me to stay and I was pleased with that."

Unbeaten run
Aragonés succeeded Iñaki Saez as Spain coach in 2004 and steered the team through qualifying for the World Cup. At the finals in Germany, Spain were one of the most impressive performers in the group stage but came unstuck in the last 16 when they lost 3-1 to France. That was the first time Spain had lost in 25 matches under the former Club Atlético de Madrid trainer but the defeat still prompted speculation he would stand down.
