BV Vitesse midfielder Gill Swerts will miss Belgium's opening UEFA EURO 2008™ Group A qualifier against Kazakhstan in Brussels next Wednesday after damaging his left knee in training.
Surgery
A scan conducted today confirmed the 24-year-old had suffered cartilage damage while preparing for the new Dutch season. Swerts, who was yesterday named in René Vandereycken's maiden Belgium squad, faces surgery and a potential long wait to win his fourth cap for the Red Devils. He has been replaced by Wim De Decker, 24, from KRC Genk.
Georgia change
Meanwhile, Georgia coach Klaus Toppmöller has called up 28-year-old FC Krylya Sovetov Samara striker David Mujiri after FC Dynamo Kyiv's Otar Martsvaladze dropped out of the party to play the Faroe Islands because of injury. Georgia kick off their UEFA EURO 2008™ Group B campaign away to the Faroes on 16 August.
