France call Frey in for Coupet

ACF Fiorentina goalkeeper Sébastien Frey has been called up by France for Wednesday's visit of the Faroe Islands after Grégory Coupet picked up a hand injury.

ACF Fiorentina goalkeeper Sébastien Frey has been called into the France squad for Wednesday's visit of the Faroe Islands after No1 Grégory Coupet picked up a hand injury during Saturday's 1-0 Group B loss to Scotland.

Run ended
Defender Gary Caldwell scored the goal at Hampden Park to make Scotland only the second side in 12 years to defeat France in a qualifying tie, a run encompassing 23 matches. Coupet sustained the injury to a finger during the second half in Glasgow but played on until the final whistle, suggesting he should be fit for Olympique Lyonnais' next Ligue 1 fixture against AS Saint-Etienne on Saturday.

'Overconfidence'

Mickaël Landreau from Paris Saint-Germain FC is expected to deputise for Coupet against the Faroes in Sochaux, with the 26-year-old Frey - who was last selected in November 2004 - starting on the bench. Coach Raymond Domenech said of the Scotland reverse: "Beforehand I warned the players against overconfidence and I will tell them again. It is going to be a tough group. Scotland came out like a team that wanted to cause us problems and they are now rivals in the race for qualification."
