Aragonés staying with Spain

Spain coach Luis Aragonés has signed a contract extension that could keep him in charge until after the UEFA EURO 2008™ finals in Austria and Switzerland.

Spain coach Luis Aragonés has signed a contract extension that could keep him in charge until after UEFA EURO 2008™ in Austria and Switzerland.

Staying on
The 68-year-old had made a verbal agreement with the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to extend his stay as national-team boss following the FIFA World Cup finals in Germany and before the start of UEFA European Championship qualifying. However, a 3-2 defeat in Northern Ireland last month and a 2-0 loss in Sweden on 7 October had sparked widespread media criticism and speculation over his future.

Contract signed
Aragonés had offered to resign after the Northern Ireland reverse but did not repeat the gesture after the Sweden setback. RFEF president Ángel María Villar then confirmed during a visit to Pamplona that Aragonés has put pen to paper on an extension. Spain are fifth in qualifying Group F with three points, nine behind leaders Sweden, who have played one game more. Aragonés replaced Iñaki Sáez as coach following UEFA EURO 2004™.
