Hughton's Irish honour

Chris Hughton has been confirmed as the new part-time assistant manager of the Republic of Ireland.

Tottenham Hotspur FC assistant coach Chris Hughton was confirmed as the new part-time assistant manager of the Republic of Ireland today.

Part-time job
Hughton will remain in his full-time post as first-team coach at Spurs under Glenn Hoddle and will assist new Ireland coach Brian Kerr on a part-time basis.

'Great honour'
Hughton, a former Spurs full-back who won 53 Irish caps, will begin his duties ahead of next week's friendly against Scotland. "It is something that will be a great honour for me to take and to do. It would also benefit the club in terms of the experience I would get from it and the international players I would see on my travels," Hughton told Tottenham's official website.

Club duties unaffected
"It is certainly something that won't affect what I do here, which will still be full time," Hughton added. "On an international week we have something like 12-14 players that are away from the training ground. So these weeks tend to be lesser training weeks because, obviously, we have less players to work with."

Kerr appointment
Kerr, who achieved notable success at various age levels with Ireland, was appointed the country's national coach last week following the resignation of former boss Mick McCarthy.
