Torres exits Spain selection

Fernando Torres will miss Spain's ties in Latvia and Liechtenstein, handing a chance to Luis García but hindering Club Atlético de Madrid's domestic ambitions.

Spain striker Fernando Torres will miss the qualifiers in Latvia and Liechtenstein and is set to sit out the rest of Club Atlético de Madrid's season.

'Dream'
The 23-year-old suffered an ankle injury in training with the national team before their fixtures on 2 and 6 June in Riga and Vaduz respectively. To replace Torres, Spain coach Luis Aragonés has handed RCD Espanyol forward Luis García a first international call. He said: "This is a dream come true. It's a pity to be invited to the national team due to another player's injury, but I have to make the most of this chance." The 26-year-old is one of two potential debutants in the squad, alongside striker Roberto Soldado from CA Osasuna. Spain are third in Group F, four points behind leaders Northern Ireland but with a game in hand. UEFA Cup-chasing Atlético are sixth in the Primera División, a point behind fifth-placed Real Zaragoza with two matches remaining.
