McFadden gets Vogts' confidence

Scotland have called up Motherwell FC striker James McFadden for the friendly against Austria on 30 April.

First start
The 20-year-old was today named in a 22-man squad for the friendly against Hans Krankl's side at Hampden Park. McFadden has won two caps - one against a Hong Kong XI, the other in a recent friendly win against Canada - but both as a substitute.

'Cheeky boy'
Now he has been recalled to the senior side from the Under-21s as Scotland warm up for the UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifier against Group 5 rivals Germany on 7 June in Glasgow. Vogts said: "James is a cheeky boy and against Germany we need this sort of cheeky player."

Burley back
Also recalled to the squad after an 18-month absence is Derby County FC midfield player Craig Burley. The 31-year-old replaces Rangers FC captain Barry Ferguson who sits out the game with a pelvic injury. "I met with Barry and the Rangers medical people and right now he takes painkillers and trains only one day a week, so he can't make this match," the coach said. "But I need him for the Germany game."

Scotland squad
