Germany to miss Hamann

Ankle surgery has ruled Dietmar Hamann out of the qualifiers against Scotland and the Faroe Islands.

Germany midfield player Dietmar Hamann will miss the UEFA European Championship qualifiers against Scotland and the Faroe Islands in June as he requires ankle surgery.

Player examined
A German Football Association (DFB) spokesman said on Friday that the Germany team doctor had examined Hamann, who plays for Liverpool FC in England, and said he would have to have an operation within the next two weeks.

German legend
Hamann missed Wednesday's 1-0 friendly victory against Serbia and Montenegro in Bremen because of the injury. Germany will play Canada on 1 June in Wolfsburg before facing Scotland, whose manager is German legend Berti Vogts, six days later at Hampden Park.

Group leaders
Hamann will miss those two matches as well as Germany's next qualifier away to the Faroe Islands on 11 June. Germany lead Group 5 having won two and drawn one of their three qualifiers to date.
