Europeans in semi-final showdown

Turkey will meet France in the last four of the FIFA Confederations Cup on Thursday.

Turkey will meet France in the semi-finals of the FIFA Confederations Cup after drawing 2-2 against Brazil.

Win needed
The Brazilians, who needed a win in Saint-Etienne to go through, took a deserved first-half lead through Adriano, but were pegged back by Gökdeniz Karadeniz's equaliser in the 53rd minute and stunned by an 81st-minute strike from substitute Okan Yilmaz.

Ronaldinho off
The world champions then saw substitute Alex equalise in the third minute of added time. In the aftermath of the goal, Brazil's Paris Saint-Germain FC forward Ronaldinho was shown a second yellow card for tangling with Turkey goalkeeper Rüstü Reçber, who was booked.

Four teams left
Both teams finished with four points and the same goal difference but Senol Günes's side advanced on goals scored - four to Brazil's three. Group B winners Cameroon, who drew 0-0 with the United States in the day's other game, will play Colombia in the other semi-final, with both games being played on Thursday.

Bülent block
In a passionate match, watched by an almost entirely Turkish 30,000 crowd, Turkey made up for being beaten twice by Brazil in the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Yet the Brazilians made the better start, with a number of early chances going their way including an Adriano shot which was cleared off the line by Turkey captain Bülent Korkmaz.

Similar strikes
There was no escape for Turkey, though, in the 23rd minute when a long punt upfield caught the defence napping and Adriano was able to knock the ball over the advancing Rüstü. However, eight minutes after the re-start, Turkey defender Ibrahim Üzülmez chipped the ball over the Brazil rearguard and Gökdeniz lobbed the ball over Dida to equalise.

Attacking display
The goal blew the match wide open, with Brazil frantically pushing forward in search of a winner and Turkey looking to use the pace and dribbling of striker Tuncay Sanli on the break. The European side finally made the breakthrough when Yilidiray Bastürk sprinted through on the break and slipped the ball wide for Okan Yilmaz to score. Alex's late goal and Ronaldinho's departure added more late drama but Turkey held firm.
