Turkey take third place

Okan Yilmaz's goal gave Turkey a 2-1 win against Colombia and third place in the FIFA Confederations Cup.

A late strike by Okan Yilmaz gave Turkey a 2-1 win against Colombia on Saturday and third place in a FIFA Confederations Cup tournament overshadowed by the death of Marc-Vivien Foé.

Respects paid
Players wore black armbands and a minute's silence was held before kick-off in memory of the Cameroon midfield player, who collapsed in Thursday's 1-0 semi-final win against Colombia in Lyon and died shortly afterwards.

Early advantage
Once the match got under way, Tuncay Sanli gave Turkey a second-minute lead after a defensive misunderstanding. Colombia goalkeeper Oscar Cordoba miscued a low clearance and defender Jorge Lopez failed to head clear, sending the ball straight into the path of Tuncay, who scored with a half-volley.

Golden chance
Gokdeniz Karadeniz might have doubled Turkey's lead after another misdirected Cordoba clearance was intercepted by the midfield player, but he could only shoot wide of an open goal from 22 metres.

Hernandez involved
It was not all one-way traffic, however, with Colombia playmaker Giovanni Hernandez proving a constant threat to the Turkey defence with his deft flicks and perceptive passing.

Well-worked equaliser
Colombia's best chance fell to striker Victor Aristizabal, who steered Eudalio Arriaga's cross onto the post from close range just after the break. In the 63rd minute, however, it was 1-1, as Hernandez played a one-two with Aristizabal inside the penalty area and just managed to nudge the ball past advancing goalkeeper Omer Catkic for the equaliser.

Late winner
Colombia should have been in front moments later when Hernandez dinked the ball through for Aristizabal, who failed to beat Catkic from point-blank range. Colombia paid the price for their profligacy when Turkey caught them with a swift counterattack and Tuncay fed the ball wide for Okan, who missed a late penalty in Thursday's 3-2 semi-final defeat by France, scored with a powerful low shot into the right-hand corner to snatch victory.

Sunday final
Holders France take on Cameroon in Sunday's final at the Stade de France in the Paris suburb of St Denis.
