Baidachny names first selection

New Belarus coach Anatoly Baidachny has named a 26-man squad for next week's friendly against Iran.

Playing for pride
The European side welcome the Iranians to Minsk on 20 August as a warm-up for their remaining UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifiers. Belarus have no chance of making it to Portugal after taking just three points from six games in Group 3 but the players will be eager to impress Baidachny who was appointed last week.

Iranian strength
Baidachny is well aware of the strength of his side's opponents. "They have players such as Ali Daei or Mehdi Mahdavikia who are well known not only in Asia, but throughout Europe." Belarus are next in competitive action on 6 September at home against the Czech Republic before ending their EURO 2004™ campaign four days later with a trip to Moldova.
