Luis Suárez became the first player to lift the European Champion Clubs' Cup and UEFA European Championship in the same year but Denis Law was named the continent's finest.

Spain combined home advantage and spirited teamwork to win what would remain their only major trophy until UEFA EURO 2008, as the UEFA European Championship grew from 17 entrants to 29. After an extra-time victory against Hungary in the semi-finals José Villalonga's side defeated holders Soviet Union 2-1 in the showpiece at a raucous Santiago Bernabéu, Marcellino heading in the winner six minutes from time.
