EURO friendly report card: Austria

Shaky in beating Albania, and more impressive when losing to Turkey, Austria have learned some lessons, but coach Marcel Koller has more bolts to tighten before the finals.

Results
Saturday: Austria 2-1 Albania (Janko 6, Harnik 13; Lenjani 47)
Almer; Fuchs (Suttner 46), Dragović, Hinteregger (Wimmer 46), Klein; Alaba (Schöpf 87), Baumgartlinger (Ilsanker 76); Arnautović (Burgstaller 87), Junuzović, Harnik; Janko (Okotie 79)

Marc Janko turned the ball home at the second attempt following good work by Zlatko Junuzović in the sixth minute and then Martin Harnik was on the spot after a long ball by Robert Almer – the first assist for Austria's goalkeeper in the national team. Two minutes after the break Ermir Lenjani gave Albania hope when he finished from close range under the bar, but Ergis Kaçe's dismissal on 78 minutes made it easier for Austria.

Tuesday: Austria 1-2 Turkey (Junuzović 22; Çalhanoğlu 43, Arda 56)
Özcan; Fuchs, Dragović (Prödl 59), Hinteregger, Klein (Garics 78); Alaba (Schöpf 78), Ilsanker; Arnautović, Junuzović (Hinterseer 72), Burgstaller (Jantscher 66); Okotie (Janko 66)

A mixture of missed opportunities up front and individual mistakes at the back cost Austria in Vienna. Marcel Koller's side carved out the bulk of the chances. Junuzović finished off a fine cutback from Marko Arnautović midway through the first half and Austria looked set to extend their advantage. However, Hakan Çalhanoğlu scored with a dream free-kick on the half-time whistle and then Arda Turan pounced on a blunder by goalkeeper Ramazan Özcan.

What we learned
1) Julian Baumgartlinger, David Alaba and Zlatko Junuzović's positional switches in central midfield against Albania lent Austria an unpredictable edge.

2) Austria were better defensively against Turkey than they had been against Albania, but a number of chances went begging at the other end.

3) Goalkeeper Ramazan Özcan seems to be cursed for Austria; in his six appearances for the senior national team, they have recorded three draws and three defeats.

Questions remain
• Aleksandar Dragović appears to have his starting spot nailed down at centre-back, but will Sebastian Prödl or Martin Hinteregger play alongside him?

• If Marc Janko gets injured, could Rubin Okotie or Lukas Hinterseer replace him without demanding a complete change to Austria's playing style?

• Will returnee Guido Burgstaller and debutant Alessandro Schöpf make a late charge into Austria's finals squad?

Five great EURO volleys

Room for improvement
These friendlies were a warning to Austria. Defensive leader Dragović and particularly Hinteregger looked shaky at times, while Okotie struggled to shine in the absence of Janko despite his best efforts. There are still one or two nuts and bolts that Marcel Koller needs to tighten, though the Swiss coach had made judicious use of his spanner before the Turkey match.

"Austria's familiar strengths were on display in the matches against both Albania and Turkey, such as their high pressing and neat interplay, but some weaknesses also manifested themselves and will require addressing before the EURO. It was mainly individual mistakes in both games that significantly hampered Austria's collective efforts."
