Pepe and Ronaldo double up with EURO triumph

Pepe and Cristiano Ronaldo have completed a EURO and UEFA Champions League double, triumphing with Portugal after conquering the club scene with Real Madrid in May.

Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe have completed a club and international double, adding the UEFA EURO 2016 title to their UEFA Champions League final triumph with Real Madrid on 28 May.

Forward Ronaldo left the UEFA EURO 2016 decider on a stretcher during the first half, but was able to celebrate a landmark victory by the time of the final whistle at the Stade de France – just six weeks after his clinching penalty in Madrid's shoot-out win against neighbours Atlético in Milan.

Centre-back Pepe, meanwhile, ended Sunday's showpiece as man of the match following his success with Madrid, while France and Atleti striker Antoine Griezmann finished both contests on the losing side. As for Griezmann's team-mate Adil Rami, he did not feature in Saint-Denis but lifted the UEFA Europa League trophy with Sevilla.

Several more players have less solid claims to having won both big trophies in such quick succession. Wim Kieft landed the 1988 European Cup with PSV Eindhoven but did not make it off the bench with the Netherlands for the EURO '88 final. Madrid's Nicolas Anelka had the same experience with France in 2000, while team-mate Christian Karembeu fared slightly worse – as unused squad member in both the 2000 UEFA Champions League and UEFA EURO 2000 finals (though he had been on the field to win the UEFA Champions League and World Cup two summers before).

Sami Khedira, meanwhile, tasted UEFA Champions League glory with Madrid in 2014 yet was injured in the final warm-up prior to Germany picking up the World Cup a few weeks later.
