Hajto answers Poland's call

Tomasz Hajto has come out of retirement to play for Poland in the UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifiers.

International retirement
The 30-year-old, who has played 47 times for his country, quit international football last November after the 1-0 home defeat by Group 4 leaders Latvia under then coach Zbigniew Boniek.

Unexpected decision
The FC Schalke 04 defender's unexpected decision has been greeted with widespread approval. "The decision was made on Tuesday evening," Polish Football Federation spokesman Michal Kocieba said. "Coach Pawel Janas talked to the player and asked him to come to the training camp in Swierklaniec. Hajto is there now preparing for the match." Poland are third in Group 4 with three points from two games, a point behind Hungary but four adrift of Latvia.

Jensen struggling
Meanwhile, Claus Jensen is struggling to be fit for Denmark's Group 2 qualifier against Romania in Bucharest on Saturday. The Charlton Athletic FC midfield player, who had been tipped to make the starting line-up after scoring a hat-trick against Egypt in a friendly last month, injured his foot in training.

'Too early to say'
"I hope to be able to train on Thursday but it's too early to say," Jensen said. AC Milan striker Jon Dahl Tomasson is expected to lead the attack ahead of the out-of-sorts FC Schalke 04 forward Ebbe Sand. Denmark are third in the section with four points but have a game in hand on Romania who are second - with six points from three matches - behind Norway.

Dobie withdraws
Scotland manager Berti Vogts has been forced to make one change to his squad to face Iceland on Saturday and Lithuania next Wednesday. West Bromwich Albion FC striker Scott Dobie has pulled out after picking up an injury during his side's weekend Premiership defeat by Birmingham City FC.

Gray promoted
Dobie's withdrawal has prompted the call-up of the Bradford City FC forward Andy Gray, who got his first taste of international football when he was included in Vogts' Future Team for last month's friendly against Turkey - and marked his appearance with Scotland's only goal. Scotland have already had to contend with the withdrawal of Leicester City FC's Paul Dickov.

Touch and go for Litmanen
AFC Ajax striker Jari Litmanen is rated as doubtful for Finland's Group 9 qualifier against Italy in Palermo on Saturday. Meanwhile, Litmanen's Ajax team-mate, Andy van der Meyde, has left the Dutch squad to play the Czech Republic in Rotterdam in Group 3 on the same day. The forward has a thigh injury, although it is not known if coach Dick Advocaat will call up a replacement.

Moldovan additions
Also in Group 3, Alexander Popovich of FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk and Serghey Rogaciov of FC Saturn Moskovskaya Oblast were the last-minute additions made by Viktor Pasulko to his Moldova squad for the qualifiers with Belarus on Saturday and the Netherlands next Wednesday. Meanwhile, Ghenadie Pusca, Stanislav Ivanov and Eugheny Patula are doubtful starters because of injuries.

Horlock out
Elsewhere, Manchester City FC midfield player Kevin Horlock has dropped out of Northern Ireland's squad to face Armenia in Group 6 on Saturday citing personal reasons. Horlock is the third withdrawal this week after Peter Kennedy and Phil Mulryne succumbed to injury. Manager Sammy McIlroy has drafted in Southampton FC defender Chris Baird and Leyton Orient FC midfield player Kieran Toner from the Under-21s.
