Portugal coach rings changes

New Portugal coach Agostinho Oliveira has freshened up his squad for the friendly with England.

Come the revolution
Oliveira, who has promised a 'quiet revolution' after replacing António Oliveira in the post, has made eight changes to the party that exited the FIFA World Cup finals in the first round.

New faces
Into the group come the uncapped Boavista FC midfield player Jorge Silva and FC Porto defender Paulo Ferreira. There are also places for the Newcastle United FC playmaker Hugo Viana and Fulham FC forward Luis Boa Morte, and a recall for SL Benfica's Simão Sabrosa who missed the finals through injury.

Pinto counted out
The notable absentees are Jorge Costa and Paulo Sousa, both of whom retired from international football after the World Cup, as well as João Pinto, suspended for punching the referee in the defeat by South Korea.

Up at the Villa
Portugal, who will host the 2004 UEFA European Championship, travel to Villa Park in Birmingham for the friendly match on 7 September.

Portugal squad
Pereira, Baia, Valente, Ferreira, Conceição, Couto, Andrade, Beto, Rui Jorge, Fernando Meira, Rui Costa, Silva, Costinha, Vidigal, Viana, Petit, Pauleta, Capucho, Boa Morte, Figo, Gomes, Sabrosa.
