Royal support for Denmark

Princess Alexandra of Denmark will be among nearly 6,000 fans cheering on the national side against the Czech Republic.

Princely backing
Denmark qualified as runners-up from Group C and are unbeaten in their first three games of the tournament. They had royal backing for those games, from Crown Prince Frederik's younger brother Joachim, who congratulated the players in their dressing room after each of the games.

Popular
Denmark's royal family are hugely popular: more than half of the country watched Frederik's wedding to Australian Mary Donaldson this May. A similar number of Danes will watch the quarter-final against a talented Czech side, while nearly 6,000 Danish fans will be cheering them on in the stadium.

Thanks from mayor
Meanwhile, the mayor of Guimarães, Dr António Magalhães, has publicly praised the Danish fans for their behaviour before and during Denmark's opening match against Italy, which finished 0-0.

Magalhães letter
In a letter to the Danish ambassador in Portugal, Magalhães wrote: "Please allow me to congratulate the people of Denmark for their worthy and decent behaviour on 14 June and the days around that date in Guimarães in connection with the match between Italy and Denmark."

Friends in Guimarães
The letter continued: "The joy, the excitement, the public displays of support – all very well-behaved – of the Danish fans made such an impact on the Guimarães people, that the locals have since been worrying about their Danish friends' results in the matches to come."
