EURO 2004™ poster revealed

The official UEFA EURO 2004™ finals, conceived by Miguel Rocha, was unveiled on Tuesday in Lisbon.

Competition winner
Euro 2004, S.A. and the Centro Português de Design - the Portuguese design centre - held a competition in which they invited various designers, painters and illustrators to present their proposals for the tournament poster.

Jury make selection
Rocha's entry was selected by a jury whose members included Gilberto Madaíl, Euro 2004, S.A. chairman of the board; Alan Ridley, senior director of UEFA's marketing operations centre; Alda Rosa, a designer; Sílvia Chico, an art critic; and journalist Ana Sousa Dias.

'Couldn't be more satisfied'
Dr Madaíl said: "We wanted an image that captured the spirit of this competition and at the same time applied to everyone that will participate in the tournament. We couldn't be more satisfied with this work."

No easy choice
Ridley explained that it had not been an easy choice for the jury. "It was a long and lively discussion," he said, "but this poster captures the spirit and passion of football and Portugal." Pedro Brandão, president of the Centro Português de Design, added: "Portuguese creativity is proud to have participated in this project."

Artist's intentions
Rocha, the winning artist, said: "I tried to represent the immediate moment before the great football explosion, that is a goal. With the image in my head I started drawing but I also wanted the public present in such a way that we could almost hear them."

Available to buy
This poster will be displayed in towns and cities across Portugal and from April until the end of the tournament it will be available to buy in Portuguese shops and in www.euro2004.com's online store.
