Makelele shoulders injury burden

Midfield player Claude Makelele is nursing a shoulder injury after France's dramatic win against England.

Safety first
The Chelsea FC player was substituted 30 seconds before the final whistle in Sunday's 2-1 victory "to avoid risking further damage", according to France coach Jacques Santini. The 31-year-old could therefore be unavailable for the holders' second Group B game against Croatia in Leiria on 17 June.

Dacourt ready
In the event that Makelele cannot play, his place is likely to be taken by Olivier Dacourt, who is seeking his 17th cap. "Be it on the bench or on the pitch, I am here to do what the coach wants," said Dacourt.

All present
No other players received any injuries during yesterday's match, although Santini complained that "Thierry Henry and William Gallas received plenty of kicks" during the cross-Channel encounter.
