Case for Greece's defence

Portugal will literally face a tough challenge in the UEFA EURO 2004™ final against a Greece team who have made the most tackles in the tournament.

Any side that can go through 195 minutes of UEFA EURO 2004™ knockout football without conceding a goal must be doing something right, and Greece's rankings in the BenQ Official Statistics for the tournament bear this out.

Tough tacklers
There have been 242 tackles by Greek players - 66 more than the next team, the Netherlands. That is 48.4 per game; only Russia, with 165 tackles from their three games can beat that. Naturally, then, Greece dominate the individual rankings for tackles made.

Rankings
Theodoros Zagorakis has made 47 tackles, 12 clear of second-placed Giovanni van Bronckhorst. Giourkas Seitaridis has the third-highest figure, 32, and also in the top ten are Traianos Dellas and Konstantinos Katsouranis. Mihalis Kapsis takes the number of Greek players in the top 20 to five, while there are just two Portuguese.

Keeping possession
They have also held on to possession well when they have had the ball. On average, Greek players have been tackled 26 times per game. That is under half the figure for Portugal and lower than all other teams except Italy.

Clincal shooting
Portugal may outstrip Greece on many of the attacking criteria, but Otto Rehhagel's side are more clinical. While Portugal have had 36 per cent of their shots on target, the Greek figure is 47. At the other end, Portugal may find difficultly beating Antonios Nikopolidis. The goalkeeper has made 16 saves, the fifth highest in the tournament, and his average per game is 67 per cent higher than his opposite number in the final, Ricardo.
