Baric bows out

Croatia coach Otto Baric has resigned after the team failed to win a game at UEFA EURO 2004™.

No victories
Baric guided the team to 0-0 and 2-2 draws against Switzerland and France respectively, but saw hopes of reaching the knockout stages dashed by a 4-2 loss to England. Subsequently, his choice of tactics and formations prompted press criticism. After meeting with Croatian Football Federation (HNS) president Vlatko Markovic, Baric decided to stand down.

Glad to leave
In criticising those who focused on the negative rather than offer considered opinion, Baric said: "Thank God, it's over. I said to Vlatko that it's over. I don't want to be Croatia coach any more, although I would have been the best solution for the national team's future. I know the team and I know what is required in the [2006 FIFA] World Cup qualifying phase."

'Played well'
The 73-year-old Baric continued. "We were not so bad. We played well against Switzerland, but we didn't have any luck. Against France we played very well and Ivica Mornar missed a chance to win right at the end. We played with the same team against England but the opponent was better." The HNS will appoint a new coach after its executive committee meets next week.
