A Belarusian Super Cup has been contested for the first time, pitting the Belarusian Premier League champions against the Belarusian Cup winners.

The first edition of the new competition took place in Minsk on 8 March as the meeting of FC BATE Borisov and FC Naftan Novopolotsk marked the start of the 2010 season.

Football Federation of Belarus (BFF) Henadz Niavyhlas gave a pre-match address and the crowd were also warmed up by a concert featuring well-known Belarusian singers.

The main event produced a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes, heralding a penalty shoot-out which champions BATE won thanks to the heroics of goalkeeper and man of the match Sergei Veremko.

Off the pitch, the BFF signed the UEFA Convention on Referee Education and Organisation at a ceremony in Tel Aviv during the recent UEFA Congress. Joining the convention represents an important step towards improving refereeing standards throughout the country.
