Football fans in Poznan had more than the FIFA World Cup to look forward to today after a giant floral depiction of the UEFA EURO 2012 logo was unveiled in the Polish city.

The main EURO motif for the UEFA European Championship in Poland and Ukraine in two summers' time has been recreated in the form of a flowerbed on the banks of Poznan's lake Malta, one of the city's chief recreational areas.

Friday's unveiling ceremony preceded the World Cup curtain-raiser in South Africa and caught the imagination of local people enjoying the warm weather. The authorities in Poznan, one of four Polish venues for the EURO finals, even laid on a special outdoor breakfast.

Michał Prymas, representing the mayor of Poznan, said the floral display heralded a series of promotional events planned to build up to the EURO. "We want to spread the message that the tournament is not just about football but will be a unique celebration for the whole city," he said.

"We will stage landmark events on the way to the finals. The floral display is something people will be able to enjoy for the next two years during walks beside the lake."
