Alexander Frei missed a penalty as Switzerland were held to a goalless draw by Australia in St Gallen in their final friendly match before the start of their UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying campaign.

With Switzerland in action against England in Group G on Tuesday, coach Ottmar Hitzfeld opted to rest Steve von Bergen, Reto Ziegler, Xherdan Shaqiri, Pirmin Schwegler and Tranquillo Barnetta with goalkeeper Diego Benaglio on the bench.

After a first half of few chances in the first match between the two sides, Switzerland pressed after the restart and earned a penalty on 60 minutes when Lucas Neill brought David Degen down in area, only for Frei to shoot wide.
