Flynn bids to make Wales job his own

Brian Flynn hopes to "stake a claim for the job on a permanent basis" after being named as Wales' caretaker manager for the Group G qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland.

One-time Burnley FC and Leeds United AFC midfielder Brian Flynn will manage Wales for their next two UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying games, having previously been in charge of his nation's Under-17, U19 and U21 sides.

The 54-year-old has taken the role on a caretaker basis following the departure of John Toshack, and will be in command as Bulgaria come to Cardiff on 8 October. He will then lead Wales against Switzerland in Basel four days later. Flynn's U21 side missed out on the European play-offs with a narrow defeat by Italy last week.

"Naturally, as a very proud Welshman, this is a job that I have always wanted to do," said Flynn, capped 66 times as a player. "I realise that initially it is only for two games, but I shall give it my all to try and achieve results and stake a claim for the job on a permanent basis." Wales lost their Group G opener 1-0 in Montenegro.
