Morfis welcomed back into Cyprus fold

Despite playing in the Cypriot second division, 31-year-old goalkeeper Michalis Morfis has been recalled to the Cyprus squad for the upcoming qualifiers against Norway and Denmark.

Cyprus coach Angelos Anastasiadis has unexpectedly recalled goalkeeper Michalis Morfis to his 21-man squad for the upcoming UEFA EURO 2012 Group H qualifiers against Norway and Denmark on 8 and 12 October.

Morfis is currently plying his trade in Cyprus's second tier with PAEEK Kyrenia FC after leaving APOEL FC in the summer, the 31-year-old having fallen out of favour at the club where he had spent his entire career. He will now be hoping to add to his 20 international caps – the most memorable of which came in the 5-2 victory against the Republic of Ireland in 2006 – though he lost his starting place to Antonis Georgallides the following year.

Cyprus made a positive start to their bid to reach the finals in Poland and Ukraine with a thrilling 4-4 draw in Portugal on 3 September.
