Capello quits as England manager

The Football Association has confirmed that Fabio Capello has resigned as England manager with immediate effect after talks with the organisation's chairman David Bernstein.

The Football Association (FA) has confirmed that England manager Fabio Capello has resigned from his post with immediate effect.

The decision follows a meeting involving FA chairman David Bernstein, general secretary Alex Horne and Capello where the 65-year-old Italian's resignation was accepted. An FA statement read: "The discussions focused on the FA board's decision to remove the England team captaincy from John Terry, and Fabio Capello's response through an Italian broadcast interview."

Bernstein said: "I would like to stress that during today's meeting and throughout his time as England manager, Fabio has conducted himself in an extremely professional manner. We have accepted Fabio's resignation, agreeing this is the right decision. We would like to thank Fabio for his work with the England team and wish him every success in the future."

Capello took charge in December 2007 following spells at the helm of AC Milan, Real Madrid CF, AS Roma and Juventus. He led England to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where they were eliminated by Germany in the round of 16, and to UEFA EURO 2012 as Group G winners.

England will play three friendlies – Netherlands (29 February), Norway (26 May) and Belgium (2 June) – before facing France in their EURO opener on 11 June. Co-hosts Ukraine and Sweden complete Group D at the finals.
