Semshov spells out Russia's EURO ambitions

Midfielder Igor Semshov is hoping to give Russia's travelling support plenty to cheer about in Poland and Ukraine this summer as the squad look to go one better than four years ago.

Igor Semshov did not want to leave UEFA EURO 2008 after Russia's run to the semi-finals – now he is eager to depart Poland and Ukraine this summer with no regrets.

The 34-year-old speaks affectionately about the mood in the squad four years ago and is confident that it will be the same again this time around. With the backbone of the team unchanged there is no reason why not, and while Dick Advocaat has since replaced fellow Dutchman Guus Hiddink, Semshov says they "share the same belief in the players".

Indeed, with the tournament being played in two of Russia's neighbouring countries, the midfielder believes the special atmosphere could be magnified. "This time," he said, "the stadia will display more of our colours than our opponents'." Group A rivals Poland, Greece and the Czech Republic be warned: Semshov and his team-mates are keen to give their supporters plenty to cheer about.
