EURO trophy tour makes its mark in Wroclaw

With just over a month to go until the main event, the Henri Delaunay Cup took centre stage in Wroclaw, the 'city of a thousand bridges', during a three-day stay.

The UEFA EURO 2012 Follow the Trophy tour has continued to cause a stir after visiting the Polish city of Wroclaw, with the public and local celebrities relishing in its three-day stay.

Fresh from a rousing reception in Poznan, the trophy arrived at the Municipal Stadium on Friday and embarked on a parade along Legnicka Street. Hordes of fans waited patiently at Market Square for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have their photo taken with the trophy, amid a host of games and competitions.

"I am very pleased to be in Wroclaw once again," said Polish tournament director Adam Olkowicz. "In Wroclaw, we will play one match against the Czech Republic. I hope that our supporters will be our 12th player. And I hope we will meet their expectations. Our minimum target is to reach the quarter-finals, but the expectations of the fans are far greater."

Participants in the parade visited local schoolchildren and took the opportunity to speak about the official community health programme of UEFA EURO 2012, which aims to promote a healthy lifestyle among young people and their families in Poland and Ukraine.

Fans were also given the opportunity to indulge themselves with Polish music icons Budka Suflera and Stachursky, while the official UEFA EURO 2012 anthem Endless Summer was performed by artist Oceana, who commented: "I always like to come back to Poland. It's my second home."

The mayor of Wroclaw, Rafał Dutkiewicz was also in attendance. "We are participating in an event which has a magical character," he said. “Both young and old are fascinated by this summer's tournament. European football has reached such high levels, so the Henri Delaunay Cup is probably the most valuable football trophy in the world."

Next stop: Lodz
The roadshow, which began on 20 April, now rolls onto a fifth Polish host city, Lodz on Monday, before concluding its tour of Poland with trips to Krakow and Katowice. In total, the tour will visit 14 cities across the two UEFA EURO 2012 co-host countries before finishing on the Black Sea coast at Odesa on 26 May.
