Kyiv celebrates as trophy tour comes to town

As the clock ticks down to kick-off, the UEFA EURO 2012 Follow the Trophy tour crossed over the border into Ukraine for the first time, as the Henri Delaunay Cup went on display in Kyiv.

Ukraine welcomed the UEFA EURO 2012 Follow the Trophy tour for the first time as the Henri Delaunay Cup arrived in Kyiv. Having visited seven Polish cities, the tour made it across the border to be welcomed by Andriy Shevchenko, among other local dignitaries.

After generating excitement in Katowice, the tour arrived to a rapturous reception at Kyiv's municipal council headquarters, where a ceremony was held which included the presentation of a special postage stamp. The trophy was then transported through the city in a colourful convoy which featured honorary guests, EURO mascots, an orchestra and fans. The parade took the cup to Independence Square, where it went on public display.

"This is a unique opportunity for Ukrainian fans to became a part of the tournament," said Shevchenko on the trophy tour's arrival. "When I touched it, I felt a great anxiety. The thought came upon me; I want to lift it again after the EURO 2012 final."

A grand concert took place near the trophy location, while fans enjoyed various competitions as they attempted to win tickets for UEFA EURO 2012. Local fans had the chance to have their photo taken with the trophy as great moments from the competition's history played on big screens.

"Today the dream that we have cherished for five years is becoming true; UEFA EURO 2012 is near at hand, and this beautiful cup is the evidence," said Grigoriy Surkis, president of the Football Federation of Ukraine (FFU). Shevchenko added: "When I was a child, I dreamt a lot and now, looking at this trophy, I want to tell our supporters, 'Let's dream together. With your support we can win.'"

Next stop: Ivano-Frankivsk
After crossing into Ukraine, the roadshow will next stop in Ivano-Frankivsk on Monday, before a three-day stay in Kharkiv from 15 May and then on to Donetsk. The tour set out on 20 April and the trophy will visit a total of 14 cities across the two UEFA EURO 2012 co-host countries before finishing at Odesa on 26 May.
