Hungary pick Pintér to replace Egervári

Hungary have appointed Attila Pintér to succeed Sándor Egervári as head coach, with the 47-year-old set to lead the Magyars in their UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying campaign.

Attila Pintér will lead Hungary through their UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying campaign after being named as Sándor Egervári's successor on a contract until 2016.

Egervári ended his three-year tenure in October, saying it was his "duty to resign" after the 8-1 FIFA World Cup qualifying defeat in the Netherlands in the squad's penultimate fixture. The heaviest reverse in the national team's history, the loss also resulted in Hungary finishing third in Group D behind Romania who clinched the runners-up spot.

Pintér, capped 20 times by Hungary in a playing career which saw him win a Hungarian Cup with Ferencvárosi TC and also briefly feature for K. Beerschot AC in Belgium, now assumes the reins. The 47-year-old won the Hungarian First League at the Ferencváros helm in 2004 and the cup with FC Sopron in 2005 before taking over at ETO FC Győr where, over two spells, he guided them to two third-placed finishes and last season's league championship.

"It is a huge responsibility," said Pintér. "It has been 27 years since we competed in the World Cup and this is the biggest aim. Hungarian football and its supporters don't just deserve partial successes. I believe that Hungarian football has enough good players to achieve this. I've always said that with just three, four or five of these [types of players], we can't be successful.

"Every coach needs to understand that in successful periods lots of matches are played and lots of time is spent together. Thank you to the Hungarian Football Federation (HFF) for trusting a Hungarian coach. We ask everyone to help us with our work so that we can build up Hungarian football and its national team as we have planned."
