Lithuania v Switzerland background

Lithuania will look to get back in the running for a top-three finish in UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying Group E as they welcome on-song Switzerland.

Previous meetings
• Switzerland scored four goals in the final 24 minutes as they recorded a 4-0 victory against Lithuania in November in what was the nation's first senior meeting in a major competition.

• The sides' only previous encounter came during the 1924 Olympic football tournament in France, with Switzerland beating Lithuania 9-0 on 25 May; Paolo Sturzenegger (2, 43, 68 and 85), Walter Dietrich (14), Max Abegglen (41, 50 and 58) and Rudolf Ramseyer (63p) were the scorers.

• Having kicked off with back-to-back wins, Lithuania have lost their last three Group E games without scoring, and have conceded ten times in the process.

• Switzerland, by contrast, have won their last three, scoring 11 and conceding none.

• In addition to plundering three goals, Switzerland's Xherdan Shaqiri set up four in the first half of his side's European qualifying campaign – more than any other player in the competition.

• Swiss and Lithuanian teams have met in two men's UEFA age-group tournaments, with both games ending in Swiss victories.

• At club level, the only encounter in UEFA competition was a 1996/97 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup qualifying round tie between FC Sion and FK Kareda, which Sion won after a 4-2 home success and 0-0 draw away.

• That draw remains the only time a Lithuanian side has avoided defeat against Swiss opposition in 11 UEFA fixtures – including women's games and futsal.
