The Football Association of Finland (SPL-FBF) have terminated the contract of national team coach Mixu Paatelainen.

The announcement was made on Sunday afternoon, 24 hours after a 1-0 home loss to Hungary left Finland one place off the bottom of UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying Group F with four points from six games. "We wish Mixu Paatelainen the best of luck for the challenges that lie ahead," said a brief SPL-FBF statement.

Paatelainen, who took charge in April 2011, guided Finland to a third-place finish behind France and Spain in the qualification campaign for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. A scorer of 18 goals in 70 appearances for the Nordic nation, Paatelainen has paid the price for a disappointing run of results, Finland not having prevailed since a 3-1 matchday one victory in the Faroe Islands last September.
