What to watch for in Monday's EURO qualifiers

Slovakia and Russia will look to qualify while a play-off place is on Slovenia's minds and Cesc Fàbregas and England seek new milestones with berths in France already secure.

Century beckons for Fàbregas
Cesc Fàbregas will join the likes of Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos and Andrés Iniesta as an international centurion if he features in Spain's final qualifier, against Ukraine in Kyiv. The Chelsea midfielder made his 99th appearance in the 4-0 defeat of Luxembourg on Friday.

Meanwhile, victory for Ukraine could clinch automatic qualification even if Slovakia win to finish second, as it would leave them well-positioned to end up as the best third-placed team. The other main topic of conversation is Yevhen Konoplyanka taking on the nation where he has begun well for new club Sevilla despite not forcing himself into the starting lineup. However, Konoplyanka said the game was "nothing special. It's only another match against very good team".

Third time lucky for Slovakia?
Slovakia have already spurned two opportunities to book their place at UEFA EURO 2016 and will be hoping it's third time lucky against Luxembourg on Monday. "We could have [qualified] if we'd won either of the last two games – but now we have to," said midfielder Róbert Mak.

Such circumstances mean the players will be keen not to dwell on events of the teams' friendly four years ago, when Slovakia went in front but ended up losing 2-1. "We all remember that game," said defender Ján Ďurica. "They will be highly motivated again this time round – they are playing at home – but we have to win." Slovakia have come up trumps in a similar situation before, winning their final qualifier against Poland in 2009 to qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Something to play for
Theirs may be the only game on Monday matching two eliminated teams, but there is still something at stake for Belarus and FYR Macedonia. A win for the hosts would take them to 13 points, matching their previous best UEFA EURO qualifying tally from the 2008 campaign, which took 12 matches rather than the ten this time. Meanwhile, FYR Macedonia need victory, and anything other than a Luxembourg win, to avoid finishing bottom for the second qualifying campaign running, and for the first time in a UEFA EURO section.

They will have an uncapped goalkeeper in either David Mitov Nilson or Stole Dimitrievski following Tome Pacovski's retirement on Friday, which has left Vance Sikov favourite to take over the armband. Pacovski said: "I was honoured to wear the national-team jersey all these years. We have ambitious young keepers and I really hope that my successors will be better than me."

Spain clinch qualification

Group E
England eye perfect ten

England will become only the sixth team in history to navigate UEFA EURO qualifying without dropping a point if they win in Vilnius. Roy Hodgson's team have won all nine of their fixtures to date and can join Spain (2012), Germany (2012), France (2004), Czech Republic (2000) and France (1992) in finishing their campaign with a perfect record. As for Lithuania, they are out, despite being within three points of third-placed Slovenia.

Estonia's slim hope
Unlike Lithuania, Estonia can overtake Slovenia to make a second straight play-off, but it will take some doing. Three points behind and with an identical head-to-head record, Estonia need victory and a Slovenia defeat by San Marino, and to overturn a goal-difference inferiority of nine. Reaching the play-offs would be quite something for Estonia, who did not score in any of their five away games.

Slovenia's second chance
Slovenia could have been looking to qualify automatically tonight but after losing a 2-0 lead to Switzerland in their 3-2 defeat and then being held 1-1 by Lithuania, a play-off is now their only hope. As for San Marino, their point against Estonia in November means this has already been their best ever UEFA EURO qualifying campaign, while Matteo Vitaioli got their only goal to date in the group in last month's 2-1 loss in Lithuania.

Austria's comeback

Group G
Russia a point away
While Montenegro's bid was ended when 1-0 and 2-1 leads against Austria turned into a 3-2 defeat on Friday, Russia know a point in their 150th match in this competition would take them to France regardless of Sweden's result. The key has been the run of three wins against Sweden, Liechtenstein and Moldova that has followed Leonid Slutski's appointment as interim coach; before his arrival, this match looked like it could well decide who would miss out on a top-three finish.

Concerns for Sweden
A disastrous September featuring losses to Russia and Austria has left Sweden needing Montenegro to win in Moscow to give them a chance of snatching second place with victory against Moldova in Solna. With Moldova sure to finish sixth behind Liechtenstein, this result cannot even help Sweden's hopes of being the best third-placed team and thus avoiding the play-offs. However, with Zlatan Ibrahimović on seven goals for Sweden in 2015, he is four away from matching his own record of 11 in 2012, and a likely play-off means he still has three games to close the gap.

Successful campaigns
Both these teams know their fate: Austria have won the group while Liechtenstein will end in fifth, the first time they have not ended at the foot of a UEFA EURO qualifying section.
