At a glance
Turning 30 next month, Tătărușanu is approaching his peak and is one of Romania's most important players. He is not somebody who seeks attention, but when he does have something to say the goalkeeper speaks his mind. His focus is fixed on his job and his family – and his team-mates know they can rely on this steely character.

International pedigree
Tătărușanu did not represent his country until Under-21 level and did not play for the senior side until the age of 25, but he became Romania's undoubted No1 once he nailed down a starting berth at Steaua Bucureşti. In 2010, prior to his first cap, he made two penalty shoot-out saves in a UEFA Europa League play-off tie against Grasshopper-Club. His transfer to Fiorentina in 2014 took him to another level again.

Importance for Romania
In accordance with coach Anghel Iordănescu's methodical approach, defence is key, meaning Tătărușanu is an especially pivotal figure. The fact that Romania had the best defensive record in UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying – they conceded just twice in ten games – shows how successful they have been at keeping things tight at the back. Tătărușanu, in his own understated way, was at the forefront of that rearguard effort.
