  • The eastern European neighbours have met 136 times, their first competitive encounter coming at the 1934 FIFA World Cup, where Austria defeated Hungary 2-1 in Bologna to reach the semi-finals. That remains the countries' only final tournament meeting.
  • When Hungary last qualified for a major tournament, the 1986 World Cup, they overcame Austria twice in the process, winning 3-1 in Budapest and 3-0 in Vienna. Those are the sides' most recent competitive encounters.
  • Honours have been even in the nine friendlies since then, with three wins apiece and three draws. Hungary won the most recent encounter, 2-1 in Graz in August 2006.

  • The nations have not met for 21 years – since qualifying for EURO '96.
  • Then, Portugal's Luís Figo scored the only goal in Lisbon. The return fixture in Vienna ended 1-1, full-back Paulinho Santos's spectacular equaliser effectively securing Portugal's place at the finals in England and ending a ten-year absence from major tournaments.
  • In qualifying for the 1954 FIFA World Cup, Austria defeated Portugal 9-1 in Vienna. Erich Probst marked his competitive international debut by scoring five of the goals.

  • Austria are undefeated in their three meetings with Iceland although they were held 1-1 in an Innsbruck friendly staged in May 2014. Marcel Sabitzer put Austria ahead before Kolbeinn Sigthórsson equalised. The current head coaches of the two nations, Marcel Koller and Lars Lagerbäck/Heimir Hallgrímsson, were in charge for that game.
  • The only two competitive internationals between the two countries came 26 years ago, a 0-0 draw in Reykjavik and a 2-1 win in Salzburg helping Austria qualify for the 1990 FIFA World Cup.
  • Austria's Marc Janko and Iceland's Birkir Bjarnason are club colleagues at Swiss side Basel.
