A minute of madness: Turkey's 2008 victory
  • Croatia and Turkey made their UEFA European Championship finals debut at EURO '96 and were paired in the opening game. Croatia won the match in Nottingham 1-0 with a late breakaway goal from Goran Vlaović. Then, as now, Fatih Terim was Turkey's coach.
  • The teams met again in Vienna in a dramatic UEFA EURO 2008 quarter-final, Turkey going through on penalties after a 1-1 draw in which both sides scored late in extra time. Semih Şentürk cancelled out Ivan Klasnić's 119th-minute strike to force the shoot-out.
  • Croatia gained some revenge by defeating Turkey 3-0 away – and by the same aggregate score – in the play-offs for UEFA EURO 2012.
  • The nations have been drawn together in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying competition.

  • The countries had not met for 35 years when they were pitted together in 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying. Spain won both games, Gerard Piqué's first international goal giving his team a 1-0 win in Madrid and Albert Riera's added-time strike bringing a 2-1 victory in Istanbul.
  • Turkey qualified for the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland by the drawing of lots after their play-off tie against Spain in Rome ended 2-2.
  • Turkey captain Arda Turan is registered with Barcelona having spent the past four seasons at Liga rivals Atlético Madrid.

  • The teams qualified together for UEFA EURO 2016 from Group A, the Czech Republic taking top spot and Turkey going through as the best third-placed team. Each beat the other away from home, the Czechs winning 2-1 in Istanbul thanks to Bořek Dočkal's winner; Turkey turned the tables with a 2-0 triumph in Prague through a Selçuk İnan penalty and Hakan Çalhanoğlu.
  • The only other competitive meeting was a five-goal thriller at UEFA EURO 2008, Turkey coming from two down to win 3-2 in Geneva. Two late Nihat Kahveci goals took them into the quarter-finals while eliminating their opponents.
  • Czech defender Tomáš Sivok, striker Tomáš Necid (both Bursaspor) and defender Michal Kadlec (Fenerbahçe) all play in the Turkish Süper Lig.
