  • Those were their first competitive meetings for 43 years. Sweden also had the better of their EURO '72 qualifiers, drawing 1-1 away and winning 1-0 in Solna thanks to a goal from Tom Turesson.
  • Team-mates in the English Premier League include Martin Olsson and Wes Hoolahan at Norwich City, with Sebastian Larsson and Ola Toivonen playing alongside Ireland captain John O'Shea at Sunderland.

  • Matches between these countries have traditionally been tight, with four of the last six fixtures drawn and Belgium winning the other two by a one-goal margin.
  • Two of those draws – 2-2 in Brussels, 0-0 in Dublin – came in qualifying for the 1988 UEFA European Championship as Ireland reached the finals for the first time. There have been no subsequent meetings in this competition.
  • The most recent games took place in November 1997 as Belgium defeated Ireland 3-2 on aggregate in a play-off for the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Luc Nilis scored in both legs for the Red Devils.

  • The teams met at UEFA EURO 2012 in Poznan – their first UEFA European Championship final tournament encounter – Cesare Prandelli's Italy overcoming Giovanni Trapattoni's Republic of Ireland 2-0 thanks to goals from Antonio Cassano and Mario Balotelli.
  • It was the fourth time that Trapattoni had led Ireland against his compatriots and his first defeat after two 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying draws and a 2-0 friendly win in Liege.
  • A Salvatore Schillaci strike in Rome was enough for Italy to beat Ireland in the quarter-finals of the 1990 World Cup. Four years later, Ireland defeated the Azzurri by the same scoreline during the group stage courtesy of a Ray Houghton goal.
  • The countries also crossed paths on the road to the 1972 UEFA European Championship, Italy winning 3-0 at home and 2-1 away, with Roberto Boninsegna and Pierino Prati on target in both games.
