Roy Hodgson on England draw
  • Russia got the better of England in qualifying for UEFA EURO 2008, finishing second in the group behind Croatia, who won 3-2 at Wembley in their final qualifier to eliminate Steve McClaren's team.
  • In the two direct confrontations England won 3-0 at Wembley thanks to a couple of Michael Owen goals but lost 2-1 in Moscow. Roman Pavlyuchenko scored twice after England had led 1-0, through Wayne Rooney, at half-time.
  • The Soviet Union defeated England 3-1 in Frankfurt at EURO '88 to send Bobby Robson's side home with three successive defeats; Valeriy Lobanovskiy's victors went on to reach the final.

  • The nations met in UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying, each losing 1-0 at home. Miroslav Stoch was on target for Slovakia in Moscow; Alan Dzagoev scored Russia's winner in Zilina.
  • There had been nothing to choose between the teams either in the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, a 1-1 draw in Moscow followed by a goalless stalemate in Bratislava.
  • Aleksandr Kerzhakov scored the only goal, his 25th for Russia, in the most recent encounter – a St Petersburg friendly in May 2014.

  • Russia also got the better of Wales in 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying, winning 2-1 in Moscow and 3-1 in Cardiff, where defender Sergei Ignashevich was among the scorers. It proved in vain, however, as Guus Hididnk's side lost in the play-offs to Slovenia.
  • Wales' only win in five games against the USSR came in a 1966 World Cup qualifier, Ivor Allchurch scoring the late winner in Cardiff (2-1).
