  • Spain qualified for the 1998 FIFA World Cup at the Czechs' expense. The only goal in their two qualifying meetings was a penalty converted by Fernando Hierro; Raúl González won the first of his 102 caps in Prague in October 1996.
  • The teams also met in UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying. David Villa scored twice for Spain in a 2-1 win in Granada, with Juan Mata and Xabi Alonso on target in Spain's 2-0 away victory.
  • Jaroslav Plašil, the Czech midfielder, was at Spanish club CA Osasuna between 2007 and 2009, scoring eight goals in 66 Liga appearances.

  • The countries had not met for 35 years when they were paired together in 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying. Spain won both games, Gerard Piqué's first international goal giving his team a 1-0 win in Madrid and Albert Riera's added-time strike bringing a 2-1 victory in Istanbul.
  • Turkey qualified for the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland by the drawing of lots after their play-off tie against Spain in Rome ended 2-2.
  • Turkey captain Arda Turan is registered with Barcelona having spent the past four seasons at Liga rivals Atlético Madrid.

  • Spain defeated Croatia 1-0 in their final group game at UEFA EURO 2012 thanks to Jesús Navas's 88th-minute strike to advance at their opponents' expense. All four of the teams' previous meetings had been friendly matches.
  • Croatia's first victory away from home after regaining independence came against Spain in Valencia in March 1994. They won 2-0 with goals from Robert Prosinečki and Davor Šuker.
  • Croatia midfielders Luka Modrić and Mateo Kovačić play in Spain for Real Madrid while their international team-mate Ivan Rakitić is with Liga arch-rivals Barcelona.
