Switzerland have never lost to Albania and have had the better of their competitive meetings with Romania, but are yet to win for real against neighbours France.

  • Switzerland are unbeaten in their six internationals against Albania, winning five. The teams' most recent encounters took place in 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying, Gianni De Biasi's Albania losing 2-0 in Lucerne and 2-1 in Tirana. Xherdan Shaqiri, who has Albanian roots, scored for Switzerland in both matches.
  • Several current Albanian internationals play for Swiss clubs, including three apiece at champions Basel (Shkëlzen Gashi, Taulant Xhaka and Naser Aliji) and FC Zürich (Berat Djimsiti, Burim Kukeli and Armando Sadiku).
  • Switzerland-born Taulant Xhaka has opted to represent Albania at international level; younger brother Granit plays for Switzerland.

  • Switzerland enjoyed one of their finest FIFA World Cup victories when they beat Romania 4-1 indoors in Detroit in 1994. However, Romania recovered to win the group and progress to the quarter-finals while the Swiss exited in the round of 16.
  • Swiss hopes of qualifying for EURO '92 were ruined when, needing a point from their final fixture in Bucharest, they lost to a late goal from Romania midfielder Dorin Mateuţ. That meant Scotland reached the finals instead.
  • Romania have beaten Switzerland on Swiss soil twice in six attempts, including their latest visit, in May 2012, when they prevailed 1-0 in Lucerne.

  • The neighbouring countries had never met in a competitive fixture until the UEFA EURO 2004 finals – this after almost a century of friendly games, with 32 matches between 1905 and 2003.
  • France won that encounter in Coimbra 3-1 to qualify for the EURO quarter-finals and eliminate the Swiss. Zinédine Zidane and Thierry Henry (two) scored the French goals, while Switzerland's consolation came from teenager Johan Vonlanthen, who became the UEFA European Championship's youngest ever marksman aged 18 years 141 days.
  • The countries shared two draws en route to qualification for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, where they were paired again and played out another stalemate in their opening group encounter in Stuttgart.
  • It was a different story when they faced off in the group stage of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, France running out comprehensive 5-2 victors with five different goalscorers.
