David Alaba has developed into a crowd favourite for both the Austrian national team and Bayern München. Virtually unchallenged as his country's footballer of the year for the past five seasons, he has also been an ever present in the UEFA.com users' Team of the Year since 2013. His value as a left-back and defensive midfielder is well documented, while this season he has also shown himself to be more than capable as a centre-back. His versatility is such that it would not be a surprise to see him deployed as a winger or even a playmaker in years to come.
International pedigree
In October 2009, Vienna-born Alaba made his international debut aged 17 years and 112 days, making him Austria's youngest ever player. This summer, though, will be his first major tournament; he could collect his 50th cap, too, should Marcel Koller's team make it to the knockout rounds, and might also celebrate turning 24 at the finals – his birthday is on 26 June.
