Pirlo and Giovinco out of Italy reckoning

Andrea Pirlo and Sebastian Giovinco have not made Italy's latest 30-man squad, with Antonio Conte keeping his options open in the run-up to the 31 May deadline.

Antonio Conte has kept his options open by naming a 30-man provisional Italy squad, with seven players to be cut before the coach announces his final 23.

Conte called up an extended selection for a recent training camp in Coverciano, which consisted entirely of players whose club campaigns were over. Nine members of that party do not make the latest cut: goalkeepers Antonio Mirante and Marco Sportiello, defenders Francesco Acerbi, Armando Izzo, Lorenzo De Silvestri and Lorenzo Tonelli, midfielder Roberto Soriano and forwards Fabio Borini and Leonardo Pavoletti.

Veteran midfielder Andrea Pirlo and forward Sebastian Giovinco, who play in Major League Soccer, are not in this squad while Riccardo Montolivo and Thiago Motta will undergo tests over the next few days as both are doubtful with calf injuries. Conte is already resigned to being without the injured Claudio Marchisio and Marco Verratti in midfield.
