EURO star: Xherdan Shaqiri

Midfielders: Valon Behrami (Watford), Blerim Dzemaili (Genoa), Gelson Fernandes (Rennes), Fabian Frei (Mainz), Xherdan Shaqiri (Stoke City), Granit Xhaka (Mönchengladbach), Denis Zakaria (Young Boys).

Forwards: Eren Derdiyok (Kasımpaşa), Admir Mehmedi (Leverkusen), Breel Embolo (Basel), Haris Seferovic (Frankfurt), Shani Tarashaj (Grasshoppers).

Capped for the first time on Saturday, 19-year-old Mönchengladbach central defender Nico Elvedi has been included in Switzerland's 23-man squad for UEFA EURO 2016, but there is no place for Philippe Senderos, Udinese's Silvan Widmer or Basel midfielder Luca Zuffi.

A regular starter for Mönchengladbach in the latter part of the Bundesliga campaign, Elvedi came on as a substitute in Saturday's 2-1 loss against Belgium, and coach Vladimir Petković said: "He has made a very good start with our team. He can play in different positions on the pitch and he showed that he can handle the pressure."

Switzerland: Top five qualifying goals

Former Arsenal defender Senderos, 31, was something of a surprise omission, having been capped 57 times, but the current Grasshoppers player could not convince Petković to give him a chance. The coach explained: "It's a difficult moment for him. In recent times, there have not been not so many positive feelings for him at his club."

Left-back Widmer was omitted because Petković felt he had "two players in his position who are stronger" while the coach's conclusion on Zuffi was: "I think it would have been difficult for Zuffi to reach his peak form at the EURO because he was very tired when he came to our training camp."
