Watch Ireland's best five goals from qualifying

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill had to trim his 35-man long list by 12, with Bournemouth midfielder Harry Arter a necessary exclusion due to a thigh problem. Keane, 35, is his country's all-time leading scorer with 67 goals – he missed out against Belarus with a knock picked up in training on Saturday.

"Robbie's very hopeful he'll make it and should be OK," said O'Neill. "If not for the first game then for the matches after that. It's not easy [picking the squad] because someone is going to be disappointed and the minute you have more than 23 in your squad anyway players are going to be left out."

Among the other players omitted are Reading defender Paul McShane, Everton midfielder Darron Gibson and Colorado Rapids striker Kevin Doyle. Goalkeeper Shay Given, 40, is included.
